City with a strong Mediterranean identity Mèze is a city of Herault founded by the Phoenicians in the sixth century BC Oldest Editor's Thau, it was once a great fishing pole and agriculture before become a stronghold of oyster farming and tourism.

Mèze is located thirty kilometers from Montpellier and only 7 kilometers from Sète, between vineyards and the Thau lagoon. Its pleasant Mediterranean climate and rich heritage make it a popular city for tourists passing through. Local cuisine, rich and tasty, is also part of its tourist attractions. Shellfish-based food and other marine products is favored, including the fragmentary, pie stuffed octopus and squid, or the macaronade.

Small paradise of Languedoc-Roussillon, Mèze is definitely a must for those wishing to spend a pleasant holiday on the Mediterranean Sea.

Things to see and do

Ancient city, Mèze has a rich heritage that reflects this important story. Nature and architecture are combined perfectly to make the city desirable and inevitable.

In the old center of the city, monuments abound. One can in particular discover remains of walls and the Girard castle built in the late seventeenth century. Today it houses art exhibitions and offers its park to the public. But the most essential site is surely the Saint-Hilaire church built in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Southern Gothic type, it has been redesigned several times and presents various buttresses.

Exhibition was held in the chapel of the Penitents overlooks the ramparts on the edge of the Thau lagoon. Built in the early twelfth century, it was restored in the seventeenth century.

Romanesque style, the Saint-Martin-de-Caux church was built in the twelfth century on a sacred place dating from antiquity. Gallo-Roman ruins were discovered, including tombs and marble statues.

Located on the shores of the Mediterranean, Mèze has a fishing harbor and a lively marina. Cafes and other restaurants can admire the blue waters and the various boats.

A paleontological museum, Dinosaur plain, invites visitors to discover a working envelope reconstitution accessible to young people. The opportunity to learn a little more about the history of places.

Events and festivities

Always buzzing, the city of Mèze no shortage of entertainment and major events. Throughout the year, the streets of the city ablaze and light up.

Throughout the year, a traditional market takes place Mèze on Thursday morning. Saturday morning, a flea market takes place on the esplanade, while summer, night markets take place every Thursday from 20h to midnight.

Mèze vintners festival in January, with Saint Vincent, a day devoted entirely to wine estates nearby.

Interfaith Festival of Sacred Music moved in March, at the Saint-Hilaire church, offering various concerts.

Grand Event Mèze, the flower parade takes place on 1 and 8 May, each year. On this occasion, a parade of floats and groups invaded the streets, and an output of totemic animals of the city takes place.

For a week in June, Culture takes place in the world. City Mèze puts another country in the world to honor and proposes to discover its traditions, its history or its topicality through concerts, workshops or projections.

Fair young and environmental book, read the Pond settles early June with shows and exhibitions.

In July, celebrates Mèze fishermen with St. Peter and the Thau festival highlights the music world. At the same time, the Bouletchou festival takes place for to honor the heritage of Mèze. Exhibitions, parades and traditional ball are scheduled.

Lively, August sees the celebration of the oyster or the local party with a torchlight or jousting tournaments and bocce.
