Meyronne

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Lot

Meyronne is a commune in the Lot region of Occitania, 10 km east of Souillac.

The territory of the area of 8 km² is bordered on the north by the course of the Dordogne and south by the famous town of Rocamadour.

Previously linked to the neighboring parishes of Saint-Sozy and Mayrac, Meyronne only became an officially independent commune in 1946 and now has nearly 300 inhabitants.

Dominating the river, the village belongs first to the abbots of Tulle in the tenth century, who then build a residence, becoming the lords in the sixteenth. It was shortly thereafter, in 1580, that the castle of Meyronne was burned by Protestant troops. The stronghold then belongs to the lords of Turenne and is acquired in the early eighteenth century by the President of the Parliament of Toulouse and finally by a bourgeois living in the region that restores the castle in a style more in tune with the times.

Prospered by the activity of sailors sailing on the Dordogne, the village dominated by hills and rocks and the territory of the Quercy Causse, has retained a part of its heritage and a pleasant natural environment. Near Perigord in the north, Quercy in the south and great tourist sites, a popular stop for hikers, this is a popular stopover during a stay in the region.

Things to see and do

The small village bordering the Dordogne is still rich with many heritage elements. This is the case of his parish church dedicated to Saint-Sulpice. The building dates from 1881 but is located within the walls of the former castle of the bishops of Tulle, destroyed in 1790, and whose remains have led to the construction of houses in the square. The church was listed in 1952 because of the preservation of a vaulted chapel on the left, on which an escutcheon of Bishop Clément de Brillac, bishop of Tulle from 1495 to 1514, is still visible. Five capitals are also richly decorated, decorated with scenes, some with characters, others with animals and foliage.

As for the old castle itself, rebuilt after the revolution, in the center of the village, it was transformed into a hotel-restaurant.

Other buildings or sites that can mark a stroll: the bridge that spans the Dordogne, remarkable work of art until 1969 (it was then a suspension bridge), now with two stacks of support, the chasms of Limon to the south-east of the village, with their resurgent springs, the three dolmens of Devinaudes, at the foot of which excavations have uncovered pottery and tools and finally the curious Chapel of Our Lady of the Rock St. Mary. It is a cave dug naturally in a cliff overlooking the river in which a chapel was built in the early Middle Ages and was known pilgrims. A path of the cross has also been made on the path leading to the cave, which starts from the bridge over the Limon, a small river that flows into the Dordogne. A bell allows to locate the entrance of the chapel.

The village and its surroundings are ideal for hiking. Routes can include the perched houses that dominate the village and the river, others follow the banks of the Dordogne or lead to the Causse and its enclosures dedicated to pastoralism, via paths taken by pilgrims making a stop in Rocamadour. The site has been labeled Remarkable Garden. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from June 1st to mid-September. Free admission. Information on +33 5 65 32 21 46 or +33 6 95 50 70 36.

Leisure side "nature" again, on the edge of the river, swimming is possible near the campsite.
