The history of the Templars and Mesnil-Saint-Loup Towards 1128 The Templars who received their hand rule of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux at the Council of Troyes, came to found a house of their order while atop a plateau covered with forests (which is evidenced by letters from Hatton, Bishop of Troyes in 1143) and they named their settlement "Mesnillum Sancti Lupi", hence the name of Mesnil-Saint-Loup (we once wrote Mesnillum, Mainillum or Mesnile, french Maisnil, Maigny Mesnil (the Latin word meant a farm or dwelling house).
