Mauguio is a town of more than 17,000 inhabitants and takes its place in Occitania, in the department of Hérault. It is located on the outskirts of Montpellier, on the banks of the Etang de l'Or, on the edge of Aigues-Mortes. Its seaside resort, Carnon, offers a beautiful maritime façade on the Mediterranean Sea. Formerly called Melgueil, the town of Mauguio was an important county town in the Middle Ages. Amputée of some of its districts in the middle of the XIXe century to create the city of Palavas-les-Flots, it is today an important tourist site of the region appreciated especially for its beaches. At the gates of the Camargue, Mauguio still unveils today a modest architectural heritage, but above all dream landscapes that attract every year a large number of tourists eager to enjoy the calm of the Mediterranean Sea.

Things to see and do

Of the Mauguio of the Middle Ages, there remains only one vestige, a castrated motte erected in the middle of the tenth century. Today, a high tower, built in the 20th century, occupies the land and used to serve as a water tower for the municipality. It is the largest artificial cloche in the Middle Ages of Europe. As you walk through the town, do not miss the palace of the Counts-Evêques, classified as Historic Monuments, as well as the old castle of the Counts of Melgueil which possesses some elements of the eighteenth century. In the town center, the garden of La Motte testifies to the richness of Mauguio in medieval times. Inscribed with the Historical Monuments, it reveals the visitors of the hydraulic installations, as well as a very interesting lookout. An exhibition room was set up on the site to trace the history of the feudal clod. L'étang de l'Or is almost entirely on the territory of the commune of Mauguio. Separated from the Mediterranean by a dune strip of 600 meters, it covers 2,500 hectares. It is ideal for a few walks to discover the local fauna and flora. The huts of the Salaison each year host thematic exhibitions. Attached to Mauguio, the seaside resort of Carnon, which developed in the course of the 19th century, offers a charming marina. Lively, it allows you to enjoy the white sandy beaches of the Mediterranean and the restaurants and other terraces of bars that dot the streets and the coastline.
