Former abbey where the monks were making the famous cheese: maroilles ... "the finest of strong cheese."

This abbey was destroyed during the Revolution "din Maroilles" in which the peasants revolted.

From this set, it remains: the watermill to the tithe barn (Maison current Regional Nature Park Avesnois), the guest house.

You can also enjoy the flamiche (Maroilles pie) and the famous sugar pie in the North.

Maroilles is about 40 km from Belgium, 45 km from Valenciennes, 18km from Le Cateau, the birthplace of Henri Matisse (Matisse Museum), 90 km from Lille ...

Things to see and do

Besides a few remains of the abbey, two gardens are worth visiting in the village.

A guided tour of the village is possible by individual members of the Syndicat d'Initiative.

On the green square was erected the old abbey church porch and a bandstand concert. Avesnois is rich in kiosks together but mostly dancing stands typical of the region.

The listed church hosts many concerts and has a magnificent organ of the old abbey church.
