Marines

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Val-d'Oise

Rural municipality of Val-d'Oise, in the Île-de-France region, Marines belongs to the Community of Communes Vexin Center and is part of the Regional Natural Park of French Vexin. It is located about fifteen kilometers from Cergy, not far from Cormeilles-en-Vexin, Santeuil and Brignancourt.

Occupied since prehistoric times, the territory of Marines did not begin to develop until the early Middle Ages. Originally a simple little village in the shadow of its neighbor, Chars, the town became a very powerful seigneury during the late Middle Ages. High place of commerce, it is today a place of tourism appreciated by passing visitors.

Its authentic charm and its proximity to Paris and its monuments make it a unique holiday destination at the gates of Normandy.

Things to see and do

Rebuilt in 1538 and then in 1562, the Saint-Rémi church is a fine example of a mixture of Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Listed as a Historic Monument, and listed for its adjoining funeral chapel, it has benefited from a major interior restoration campaign. Octagonal in shape, the Saint-Rémi church is topped with a ten-sided stone dome. The crypt, located below the building, originally contained the tombs and prayers of the Brûlart de Sillery.

Private property, the castle of Marines was built in the second half of the 16th century by Tiercelin de Brosse. Largely destroyed during the Second World War, it has been completely restored. The site today consists of a central main building flanked by two pavilions with high slate roofs. The painted ceilings of the three rooms on the first floor now benefit from an inscription in the Historical Monuments and the park is classified.

While strolling through the town of Ile-de-France, you can also admire the 18th century fountain in the Place du Maréchal Leclerc, the former 17th century Oratorian convent, a monument dedicated to Alexandre Peyron and even old washhouses.

Installed in the Tourist Office, the old Thomas forge is worth a detour. It is possible to discover the equipment and instruments used to forge iron and shoe horses.
