Marigny-Le-Lozon

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Manche

Marigny-Le-Lozon is a commune located in the Manche department, in the Normandy region, 14 km west of Saint-Lô.

It was created on January 1, 2016, resulting from the merger of the small village of Lozon to the north (300 inhabitants) and the town of Marigny, to the south, which already had the status of cantonal capital.

The territory of the new locality is vast of 19 km², presenting landscapes typical of the Normandy bocage and rising in the form of terraces on the hillside in a valley.

Always focused on agriculture, Marigny and Lozon have nevertheless benefited in recent decades from their proximity to Saint-Lô and Coutances, which has allowed the development of housing estates.

A new era that does not erase the dramas of the past, the town of Marigny having been two-thirds destroyed during the Liberation battles in the summer of 1944. A memorial museum retraces its history. With other heritage sites and its "nature" leisure offer, this justifies a stopover at Marigny-Le-Lozon (nearly 2700 inhabitants) during a stay in the Cotentin...

Things to see and do

In terms of heritage, the two villages have sites of interest that can be discovered during a walk.

On Lozon, it is first of all worth mentioning the Manoir d'Hubertant, which dates from the end of the 15th century for its oldest parts. Forming a whole which is accessed via a double porch (cart and pedestrian), it is made up of a farm and outbuildings and a main building from the 16th century which has retained two round towers. These still have fire mouths, mullioned bays with original stained glass windows and interior shutters. The large central staircase with a square cage and a baluster banister dates from the 17th century. Inside, the parquet floors, fireplaces and paneling were fitted out in the 18th century. The property is listed in the Inventory. Still private, the mansion is not open to the public.

Still in Lozon, the Cousinière manor (18th century) and the church of Saint-Louet or "Saint-Lô" (15th century) complete this route…

In the village of Marigny, the church of Saint -Pierre was rebuilt after the Second World War on the foundations of an old building from the 13th and 15th centuries. In neo-Gothic style, it appears to be large in size and has a Latin cross plan at the front of which is a bell tower-porch.

Much older are the remains of a castle mound, the Butte du Castel, protected as historical monuments, on the road to the town towards the place called Le Poteau.

Next is the Cobra Memorial Museum, in the town, inaugurated in 2002 and expanded in 2009. Its name evokes Operation Cobra which began in the canton of Marigny on July 25, 1944. Commanded by General Collins, the VII Corps American, a month after the D-Day landings, then succeeded in unlocking the lock of the German defense (in a terrain which was favorable to it by its geography) and in partly circumventing the lines to move towards the west (in Brittany) and South. This decisive success, however, caused many losses among the Allies. The Memorial presents this battle in three rooms via a fund of more than 600 photos, written documents, maps, period objects and weapons. Open Sunday in May and September and Saturday and Sunday in June, July and August. Free admission. Information on +33 2 33 56 88 67 or +33 2 33 56 13 82.

Note, however, that the German military cemetery in Marigny, where more than 11,000 soldiers are buried (fallen during Operation Cobra) is actually located on the neighboring town of Thèreval.

On the cultural side, activities (exhibitions, workshops, readings) are regularly offered at the library (contact +33 2 33 56 81 29) and shows and associative events are scheduled throughout the year in the various rooms. celebrations of the new town (information on +33 2 33 55 15 26).

For athletes, it is possible to reserve a tennis court with the local club (join +33 7 80 50 73 23). As for fishermen, they can indulge in their favorite hobby, particularly at the communal pond: inquire on +33 2 33 55 18 78.

This beautifully landscaped body of water to the west of the town, benefiting from n a green setting, there are playgrounds and a pétanque court nearby. It is also a goal for a walk or a good starting point for hikes through the bucolic landscapes of the surrounding countryside. Many hiking trails or loops for mountain bikers, giving pride of place to the Normandy bocage or including heritage elements, are possible.
