The Château de La Grange is located in the town of Manom, in the department of Moselle, a few kilometers north of Thionville.
At the place called La Grange, to the north-west of the town, a castle is mentioned from the beginning of the 12th century. It was acquired by the Solouvres family in the 14th century, then it passed to the Chinery, the Brandebourgs (until 1657), the Argenteaus and in 1701, the estate became the property of Brice Gomé des Hazards.
On this date, the castle is badly damaged since the Thirty Years War. This is why in 1731 his son Christophe Gomé des Hazards had the building rebuilt according to plans by the famous architect Robert de Cotte. From 1752, the castle passed to the famous Fouquet and in 1803, the Berthier family owned it… His descendants still own it.
Architecturally, in the neo-classical style, the château takes the form of a three-storey dwelling (the second floor being attic) with two wings at right angles. At the back, the house overlooks the old moat. We notice sculpted decorations (coats of arms, flowers, faces).
Inside, the 18th century furniture and a number of works of art and decorations have been preserved.
Outbuildings were added in the 19th century.
The castle where Casanova, the Duke of Windsor and the future General de Gaulle stayed includes a park whose classical garden has given way to the Prairiales garden imagined by the landscape architect Franck Neau: a central lawn is framed by two large strips of meadows strewn with flowers. Sets of boxwood and lilies complete this garden.
The castle welcomes the public (for visits) and receptions throughout the year. Due to works, until a date not yet known, guided tours of the interiors are possible but reserved for groups of at least 20 people by appointment. Price: 7 euros. Garden: open all year. Price: 3 euros.
