Castle Malijai is located the eponymous town in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, 20 km south of Sisteron.
The present building dates from 1770 when it was bought and substantially revised by Pierre Vincent Noguier. Until then, the area was owned by a consultant at the Aix parliament which had acquired the lordship of Malijai in 1632 and was with a castle.
Protected as historical monuments since 1983, the castle Malijai has a classic style, elegant but simple, consisting of a main building flanked by towers with pepper-pot.
The ground floor which now houses the town hall of the city is richly decorated. Originally composed of an entrance hall, large living rooms, a bedroom and a reception room, especially, its plasterwork of Louis XV and Louis XIV reveal remarkable. We also appreciate the French garden partly shaded.
Castle Malijai is considered a rare example of stately architecture of the eighteenth century in this region. It must also its fame to the fact that Napoleon spent the night of 4 to 5 March 1815, returning from Elba. The town is in fact on the route of the Route Napoleon, became then the RN 85.
The floors of the castle has been transformed into housing, only the ground floor with its state rooms and its scenery is accessible. Open all year from Monday to Friday except holidays. Free admission (contact to the home of the town hall). Information +33 4 92 34 01 12 or +33 4 92 64 02 64.
