Nestled in the Vaucluse, Malaucène is a village with many surprises. With a rich natural heritage, but also historic, the village nestled at the foot of Mount Ventoux. Gourmands and gourmets will also particularly appreciate its gastronomic heritage. Ventoux wine, goat cheeses and seasonal fruits and vegetables will delight your taste buds.

The site is occupied since the Neolithic. Then, the Romans take possession of it. A castle was born at Malaucène in medieval times soon joined by fortifications to protect the village. The rivers are controlled to feed the town without overflowing. The Groseau, the main river that crosses the territory, is then a source of economic prosperity through the construction of mills. The men channeled the energy released by the water and the industries hastened to come and establish themselves on the place. Spinning mills, milling, stationery... all are prosperous. The village today lives on agriculture, vineyards, crafts and tourism. Between old stones and a life-sized play area, the walk promises to be rich in discoveries.

Things to see and do

Malaucène is the ideal place for nature sports. Between the campaigns of Beaumont-du-Ventoux, Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Serein, activities abound. It is therefore time to put on your sneakers to browse the countless hiking trails that punctuate the country. You will discover a fauna and flora quite exceptional. Mountain bikers and cyclists will also be happy. Many marked trails await you between plains and valleys. Horseback riding is also the sport of the day, as is fishing on the water. Think of the latter to bring you your fishing license. Climbers will also find climbing walls at the height of their expectations in this place where nature seems to have carved the environment so that everyone can find pleasure. It is also from Malaucène that most mountaineers leave to climb Mount Ventoux. In winter, snowshoeing takes the place of hiking shoes. Sliding sports are practiced at the Mont Serein resort.

Malaucène is also a charming village where old stones start talking about the past. The visit begins with the Saint-Michel church dating from the end of the 13th century and rebuilt in the 14th and 18th centuries. While the exterior is remarkably ornate, the interior is home to some equally remarkable treasures, including a 1711 organ and a 1880/1885 pulpit. The visit continues with the chapel Notre-Dame du Groseau built at the exit of the village towards Mont Ventoux. She is the only survivor of the monastery built in 684. It is classified as an historic monument. The old castle more like a dungeon dates from the 12th century. It has become a nightmare over the centuries. Below, you can admire the belfry whose construction took place between 1482 and 1532. You will probably go through the Soubeyran gate to join the Grand'Rue. The square is punctuated by wash houses and fountains dating from 1839 and 1861. The door Chaberlin is located to the north-west of the church and bears a Gothic inscription. Finally, the stone bench next to the Saint-Michel church measures 41.77 meters and dates from 1783.

Other vestiges punctuate the village and will decorate your visit. Among them, there is the former hotel of Espine, located next to the Chaberlin gate, the fountain of Théron, the former hotel of Saunier, the house to the Atlantes, the old town hall, the fountain rue des Trois -Visages, the old hotel of the Golden Apple, the old hotel of Brancas, the castle of Lauze, the castle of Crémessières, the door Cabanette, the Cours des Isnards, the Town Hall, the old Valouse hotel, the old hotel of Brémond, rue du Vieil-Hôpital and the passage of the Donkey.
