Maintenon

Classified as a Historical Monument in the 1940s, the castle of Maintenon was built in the early 16th century as a mainly Louis XII style building. This pleasure castle is located on the remains of an old fortress of the twelfth century and was decorated with an additional wing thanks to the generosity of Madame de Maintenon. Open to the public, it presents very beautiful restored rooms like the small apartments, the room, the oratory and the antechamber of Madame de Maintenon, the room of Marshal de Noailles, the large apartments, the cabinet of Saxony, two lined rooms eighteenth century Chinese paper, the room of Louis XIV, a billiard room of the nineteenth, a Second Empire style library or a large gallery of paintings. Around the buildings, a beautiful garden designed by Le Nôtre. The original parterre was replaced in 2013 on the occasion of the 400 years of the birth of Le Nôtre by a French garden. At the bottom of the park, it is still possible to admire the remains of the aqueduct that once fed the fountains of the park of the Palace of Versailles. The building hosted several film shoots like Fanfan la Tulipe in 1952, or Captain Fracasse in 1961.

There is a promenade along the Louis XIV canal following the path of the dike.

While strolling around Maintenon, you will be able to discover remains of the Neolithic, the menhir said The Purpose of Gargantua and the dolmen of the Cradle, both classified as Historical Monuments.

Do not miss to admire the Saint-Pierre church.

• The weekly market is held every Thursday morning. A flea market is organized in September.
• Events take place throughout the year at the castle, such as night visits on Saturdays from the end of June to September, the 17th century weekend in May with its plays and changing of the guard, the Music and Dances of the World shows in August, or the concerts organized regularly in the orangery.
• In October, place at the Legendary festival at the castle with enchanted shows, a Heritage and Imaginary book fair or even exhibitions and meetings.
