Neighbor of Belgium on the one hand and Roubaix on the other hand, Lys-lez-Lannoy is a city in the constituency of Lille. In the North, if the sun is scarce in the sky, it is none the less in the heart. And in this small town, it is good to live as evidenced by the emblem of the city, the giant Astruc. The history of the city goes back a long way as evidenced by archaeological excavations. The territory, conducive to the installation of men, was indeed occupied since the Gallo-Roman era. It is in 1164 that the city appears on official documents. At the time, Lys is spelled Lis. Lannoy is then a nearby city and the merger, repeatedly postponed, ends in 1867. Lys-lez-Lannoy was born. The economic boom did not wait for this small village. The spinning mill and the mills settle in the city and assure it an economic prosperity. In fact, demographics are flying and multiplying exponentially the number of inhabitants.

Things to see and do

Among the curiosities to discover in the city, the first and emblematic is the giant Astruc. His story is very original, especially in relation to his name. Indeed, it is not surprising to find giants in the north of France. These big fellows are often representative of their city and go out during the festivities to join the parade. But Astruc is a story. It all began when Mr. Jean Crocheteux, then organizer of the centenary of the Society of Archers of San Sebastián de Cohem had the idea to create a glove to pay homage to his city. He embarked on the adventure and built a huge character 10 meters high. Unfortunately, Astruc was destroyed during the World War. But fortunately, the city decided to rebuild it. The new version is only 4.50 meters high, but no matter, Astruc is still beautiful. And to know the origin of his funny name, it will be necessary to visit him in the gallery of the cultural space Agora where he wisely wait the days of exit.

The historical heritage is also worth seeing. You will be able to admire the church Saint-Luc dating from 1901, silent witness of the then expansion of the small village become city. The walk continues with the discovery of the monuments to the Dead and the monument of Remembrance. Finally, you can admire the chapel of the New World.

The city has many sports facilities. This is the time to put on your sneakers to indulge in your favorite sport. Table tennis, volleyball or gymnastics... all sports are at your fingertips. And to relax, a dip in the pool of 3 cities will refresh you.

To relax always and again, nothing like a stroll in the countryside. The city has several parks and gardens that will make you happy. Among them, you can choose between the Maréchal Park, the Éden urban park, the General-de-Gaulle square, the green hole on the site of the old railway line, the Jean-Ferrat Park which is the old park to Les Biches.
