City of Haute-Corse, at the gates of the two main roads leading to the center and south of the Island of Beauty, Lucciana takes place twenty kilometers from Bastia, on the eastern coast.
The one that today hosts Bastia-Poretta International Airport was initially a leading Roman colony founded by Marius. Archaeological excavations carried out in the 2000s thus revealed several vestiges of this period, like a small rural necropolis. The former village of Lucciana then developed under the influence of the various invaders of the island, from the Genoese to the French.
Tourist site very appreciated for its landscapes and its proximity with some of the most beautiful cities of the island, Lucciana also has an architectural, historical and cultural heritage of great importance and covering all the great periods of its history.
Romanesque cathedral of the twelfth century, the Proto-cathedral of the Canonica is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. Listed as a historic monument, it is considered today as one of the most beautiful and oldest medieval buildings in Corsica. Built according to a basilical plan and in a true architectural harmony, it allows notably to admire a Sainte Devote offered by Prince Rainier III as part of the twinning between Lucciana and Monaco, as well as a large Christ in contemporary bronze.
Several other religious buildings take place on the town like the church of San Parteo, Pisan Romanesque building built in the twelfth century. Listed as a Historical Monument, it is surrounded by an important necropolis. The ruins of the former Saint Francis monastery now take their place in the current cemetery of the city. In the center of the village, the Saint-Michel church dates from the beginning of the 17th century and has been listed as an historic monument.
Near the cathedral, do not miss the archaeological site of Mariana. Classified as an historic monument and open to the public, it highlights the foundations of the Roman, early Christian and medieval city. A museum labeled Museum of France should soon open its doors to highlight the objects and remains found on the spot and to raise public awareness of heritage and its protection.
Built in the second half of the 16th century, the tower of Punta d'Arcu is the work of the Genoese. Destroyed in the mid-eighteenth century by the troops of Paoli, it still reveals some vestiges. You will also be able to see various fountains, the sawmill included in the inventory of cultural heritage, or the gallic acid plant founded in the early twentieth century. It is also included in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage.
But Lucciana is also a rich natural heritage to discover the time of a walk or a family hike. Classified Natura 2000 area, the pond Biguglia worth visiting, with its nature reserve. A beach is also accessible to enjoy the sun and the atmosphere of idleness.
