The municipal museum of Louviers, in the department of Eure, was founded in 1872. Dedicated to fine arts and history, it has been housed since 1888 in a building constructed especially for this purpose, located on Place Thorel, and financed by the patron Edouard Lanon, who also bequeathed his collections to him.
In fact, the establishment's collection, now labeled "Musée de France", was made up of bequests and donations but also purchases and covers various fields: archaeology, paintings, decorative arts, furniture and earthenware...
Since the design of a new museography in 2021, the permanent exhibition is made up of three galleries.
The first is devoted to the history of the textile industry at Louviers. In particular, machines are presented that retrace the evolution of techniques (in particular a Jacquard loom) and objects and documents explaining and highlighting the working memory of the locality.
The second gallery is dedicated to the fine arts and retraces a section of the history of art (paintings, drawings, sculptures). The works are presented in such a way as to explain the different styles, genres and schools that have marked the centuries. The exhibits include Jean Nicolle (17th century), Carolus-Duran and Robert-Antoine Pichon (19th century) and Benjamin Vautier dit BEN (21st century).
Finally, the Decorative Arts Gallery presents a very large collection of ceramics and a cabinet of curiosities reconstituted in Louis XIV style.
Activities for young audiences are on offer, as well as temporary exhibitions that highlight the entire collection of the museum.
