Village de Bretagne, Locmaria takes place on the island of Belle-Île-en-Mer, in the department of Morbihan. The southernmost commune of the region, Locmaria is also part of the Lorient district, located on the mainland.
Tourist city, Locmaria has an interesting historical heritage, but also an important choice of outdoor activities. Paradise for water sports such as sailing or windsurfing, the town is also appreciated for its landscapes and its preserved nature.
Its geographical location in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean makes it an ideal place for a quiet holiday in the heart of authentic Brittany. Several lines of boats also make it possible to reach the continent quickly enough to discover the other tourist attractions of Morbihan and the Brittany coast.
The oldest church on the island, the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church dates from the end of the 11th century. Enlarged at the end of the 17th century, it has a bell tower in the form of a pepper pot of the 18th century, as well as a side chapel dating from the second half of the 19th century. Inscribed in the general inventory of the cultural heritage, it possesses very beautiful stained-glass windows of the nineteenth century.
The fortress of Kerdonis, which is part of the Historic Monuments, is a group of fortifications dating from the 19th century. The town also hosts the Port Maria Fort, which features monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries. Today it is privately owned and has a listed historic monument, as well as a stone fireplace adorned with two atlantes classified as Historic Monuments.
The fortified complex of La Ferrière, registered with the Historic Monuments, takes place along the beach of Grands-Sables. Formerly an element of defense, it was built between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. You can discover a wall covering more than one kilometer on two beaches, as well as fortified gates.
The Reduced Biche has also been listed in the Historical Monuments. Built in the mid-19th century, it is now a private property that can be admired from the outside.
The commune of Locmaria has several beaches, such as that of the Grands-Sables, that of Port An Dro, that of Port Maria, or that of Pouldon. They allow the practice of nautical activities or swimming.
For hiking, head towards Kerdonis Point to admire the fortifications scattered here and there, as well as a breathtaking view of the ocean.
In July, the village of Locmaria hosts the Festival du Theater du Bord du Champ with various performances.
Concerts are held in July at the Island Station Festival.
