The Castle was built by the princes of Talmont in the fifteenth century Protestant leader Soubise seized the castle in 1622 and it had built fortifications. Garrison under Louis XIII, bombed in 1796 by the Anglo-Dutch, acquired by the state in 1835 and restored in 1986-1994, the castle now houses the Museum of the Sea. By visiting this museum, you can access the tower for a superb view of the city, the bay of Sables d'Olonne and surrounding marshes.
The tower is part of the defensive system of the St. Clair castle. The first fire (lighthouse) was installed in 1593. In the eighteenth century the fire of Thatch is the only lighthouse Vendee.
