12th century semi-troglodyte fortified castle, the Fleckenstein castle takes place on the territory of Lembach, in the Bas-Rhin. Classified as an historic monument, it is still today the second most visited castle in Alsace after that of Haut-Koenigsbourg.
In ruins, it takes place at the top of a high bar of pink sandstone, in the middle of the forest, on the Franco-German border. Many times redesigned, it originally had the shape of a ship. There are now only the enclosure walls of the farmyard, a square tower or a few rooms. Romanesque, the oldest parts are the summit cistern and the troglodyte rooms.
Benefiting from numerous facilities for welcoming visitors, Fleckenstein Castle notably houses the reconstruction of a coal hut with activities in the summer season, a fun and educational space for the youngest, and a circuit of hike to discover three other fortified sites: the castle of Hohenbourg, the castle of Loewenstein and the Wegelnburg.
