The first traces of settlement dating back to the 3rd century BC. In 1053, Pons, Count of Toulouse founded the priory of Saint-Pierre Vigan and give to the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint -Victor de Marseille. A city will be born around the religious establishment. Forming a quadrilateral with streets checkerboard, it is protected by high walls and towers. Outside the walls, a suburb advances toward the Arre River : Bridge District ( named after the Roman bridge from the 12th century). In the middle of the 16th century most of the population of Vigan embraces the Reformation. Under Louis XIII, the old walls are slaughtered and the city expands. The 18th and 19th centuries, the industry thrives on sericulture : spinning and silkworm metamorphosis local architecture. The ever present bonnetière industry developed thanks to the railway during the Second Empire.
