At 450 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Pelée mountain, the pleasant little town of Le Morne-Rouge is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to ascend the famous volcano. Less sporty types can discover the Pelée mountain at a more leisurely pace by visiting the Regional Volcano House (Maison régionale des Volcans), an information and documentation centre devoted to volcanic phenomena and the history of Martinique's famous volcano.
The town of Le Morne-Rouge is also worth a visit for its Church of Our Lady of Deliverance. Founded in 1895, it contains a magnificent statue of Our Lady of Deliverance on a Carrara marble throne, as well as a beautiful fresco decorating the apse.
Then head for the pleasant leisure park Cap 21, a landscaped spot that's ideal for a family outing with its lake, palm grove and sports trail!
Before heading off to explore other areas, don't forget to stop by the Beauvallon plantation. Devoted to the cultivation of tropical flowers, this superb, lush estate is a great place for a walk among the anthuriums, alpinia, heliconia, porcelain roses and other floral marvels. And if you want to bring some back to the mainland, don't worry, the estate can send them to you by Chronopost (international tracked delivery), so you can treat yourself and bring a little bit of Martinique home with you!
