Founded in 1132 by the Abbot of St Remi of Reims, the old Le Mont-Dieu charterhouse, nestling at the heart of a vast forest clearing in the commune of Le Mont-Dieu in the Ardennes, forms a harmonious picture. Upon seeing the entrance pavilion and large main building dotted with mullioned windows, reminders of bygone days, you may feel sorry that the other buildings of this monastery, where Carthusian monks prayed until the French Revolution, are no longer standing. This rustic site, which once welcomed famous guests like St Bernard of Clairvaux, the Pope Eugene III and St Thomas Becket, is not open to visitors, and can only be admired from the outside.
