The Saint-Martin chapel is located at Le Monêtier-les-Bains, in the Hautes-Alpes, 14 km north-west of Briançon. It is located north of the village, rue du Château.
Small in size, modest in appearance, its oldest parts date from the 11th century but it is mentioned in the 15th century as possession of a priory.
The building is famous for its particularly well-preserved murals evoking themes from Genesis but also episodes from the life of the Virgin.
It is for this reason that the chapel is now protected as historical monuments although after the Revolution it alternately served as shed, storage room, and accommodation for occasional troops. Currently, still private property, it is used as a garage! However, with the agreement of the owners, its remarkable frescoes can be admired during a guided tour organized by the Serre-Chevalier tourist office. Inquire on +33 4 92 24 98 98.
