A new municipality created on 1 January 2016 by the merger of Lion-d'Angers and Andigné, Le Lion-d'Angers takes place in Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. It is located fifteen kilometers from Segre, and about thirty kilometers from Angers and its famous castle.
According to historians, Lion-d'Angers would hold its name from the Latin, legio, referring to a Roman legion of Julius Caesar installed at its site in the Gallo-Roman period. Regularly attacked and burned, especially during the Hundred Years War or the Religious Wars, the village of Lion-d'Angers also suffered from virtual destruction during the Second World War.
Today, the commune of Lion-d'Angers is peaceful and has turned its attention to equine breeding, as evidenced by its racecourse, as well as to tourism thanks to an architectural heritage of great interest.
