Things to see and do

In Grand-Village-Plage, the Maison éco-paysanne is an interpretation center of Oléron architecture. Outside, there are the traditional Oleron buildings built by the Dejhouqués, a local folk group: thieuzine, cellar, barn, garden, ballet, parts, etc. Inside there is a museum space on the evolution of the Oleron habitat and eco-construction: models, tables, cartographic projection, odorama, presentation of eco-materials, etc. Workshops are organized there for children during school holidays. Guided tours are offered as well as a guided walk through the streets of the old Grand-Village. The Maison éco-paysanne also organizes eco-construction courses and international participatory projects (lime-sand plaster, construction of dry stone walls, etc.).

In Petit-Village, the Port des Salines presents a salt marsh of the Oléron type like those which have covered the south of the island of Oléron for centuries. In activity, we can see the salt worker picking the fleur de sel and harvesting the coarse salt at the end of the day during the summer period (a spectacle in itself). The salt loft, in which he stores his production, also serves as a store to market it. Guided tours of the salt marsh are offered to learn all about this centuries-old know-how. On the site, an ecomuseum traces the history of salt farming. Temporary exhibitions and events are regularly organized there. Once a week Le Port des Salines becomes the setting for a farmer's market not to be missed for the pleasure of the eyes and the taste buds! An interpretive trail and boat rentals allow visitors to discover the place freely and at their own pace. Created in 1990, Le Port des Salines is part of the network of Pôles Nature de Charente-Maritime.
