Things to see and do

A small village, Port Salines has a saltmarsh Oleron such as those covered southern island of Oleron for centuries. In business, one can see the salt maker pluck the flower of salt and coarse salt harvest in the late afternoon during the summer period (a spectacle in itself). The salt cellar, where it stores its production, also serves as a store for the market. Guided tours of the salt marsh are offered to learn all about this ancient skill. On the site, a museum traces the history of salt production. Temporary exhibitions and events are regularly organized. Once a week the Port Salines becomes part of a farmer's market not to be missed for the pleasure of the eyes and taste buds! An interpretive trail and boats rentals allow visitors to discover the place freely and at their own pace. Founded in 1990, The Port Salines is part of the Network of Centres of Nature Charente-Maritime.
