Le Bourget

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Seine-Saint-Denis

The famous commune of Ile-de-France, Le Bourget takes place in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis, only a few kilometers from Paris and its monuments. Located in the country of France, it is not far from the airport of Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, on the border of the cities of Drancy, La Courneuve or Le Blanc-Mesnil.

Populated since the Gallo-Roman era, the territory of Le Bourget is a former agricultural village which developed quietly in the Middle Ages. But it was the nineteenth century and its industrial revolution that saw the commune become a center of the Ile-de-France economy. The theater of many battles during the war of 1870, Le Bourget, which was then annexed by the Prussian army, experienced many destruction. The creation of an airfield at the beginning of the 20th century will seal the fate of the town which will gradually become one of the high fiefs of the French aviation.

Dynamic and lively, the city of Le Bourget still offers many animations around aviation, as well as an interesting architectural heritage.

Things to see and do

First airport built in Paris and today the first European business airport, the airport of Le Bourget dates back to the 1930s. Built for the international exhibition of Paris, it was completely rebuilt following the destruction of the Second World War. At the entrance, a statue commemorates the flights of Lindbergh and Nungesser and Coli. The site also hosts the largest aeronautical museum in France. Installed here in 1975, it features original aircraft from the early days of aviation and the First World War, as well as models and a planetarium. Not far away, it is possible to admire a statue of Lindbergh.

Built in the middle of the 19th century on the remains of a 15th-century building, the church of Saint-Nicolas was largely restored after the war of 1870. In this building classified as Historic Monuments, Two paintings representing the pangs of the Franco-Prussian war at Le Bourget. Two altars also pay tribute to the First World War fighters for one and to the airmen, the great heroes of the city, for the other.

Walking through Le Bourget, it is possible to admire several memorials like the broken sword, a monument to the dead of 1870 built in an antique style. Do not miss the monument of the defense of Le Bourget, a chapel built in 1871, or the pyramid, a construction of 1871 also built by Prussian soldiers in memory of their priests. The latter was destroyed a few years later and rebuilt in the city's cemetery.

Several relics of the War of 1870 are to be appreciated in the town hall of Le Bourget. In particular, it is possible to see several paintings, as well as showcases gathering relics in tribute to the fighters of 1870 and the First World War.

In the town, there are several ancient villas such as millstones or buildings of Art Nouveau style. There are many decorations of wrought iron, brick or ceramics. One of the most original is the madness, an eighteenth-century building redesigned a century later.
