Listed as an historic monument, the Saint-Martin church of Layrac, in the Lot-et-Garonne, takes place on a terrace overlooking the countryside, along the Gers. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries and consecrated by Pope Urban II, it takes the form of a very simple plan with a single very wide nave, an apse and a transept with short arms. The whole is also topped with a dome mounted on pendants and is considered a true masterpiece of 12th century Romanesque art.
Lovers of religious art will appreciate the beautiful mosaic of the choir made up of floral elements, vine scrolls and acanthus and an effigy of Samson slaying the lion, or the many carved capitals that adorn pillars.
