Municipality of Ariège, in Occitanie, Lavelanet takes place about thirty kilometers from Foix, in the heart of the country of Olmes. It is located at the edge of the Aude department, not far from Raissac, Saint-Jean-d'Aigues-Vives and L'Aiguillon.
Populated since prehistoric times, the territory of Lavelanet developed at the foot of the fortified castle of Castelsarrasin then owned by the Counts of Foix. The town as we know it today begins its existence in the 9th century, under the influence of the priory of the monks of Saint-Sernin de Toulouse. Partly destroyed during the wars of religion, the town experienced a new economic boom in the 19th century with the opening of the first spinning mills.
Today, Lavelanet continues to attract visitors with the richness of its architectural heritage and the charm of its landscapes.
