The common Lanester was born in 1909 dismemberment of some of the common Caudan. It lies at the confluence of two rivers (Scorff and Blavet).
Its name comes from the Breton "lann er ster" which would mean "the Heath River.
The city was built around the yards of the arsenal that have long been a provider of employment.
