Landéda

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Finistère

Landéda is a town in Finistère, in the Brittany region, 28 km north of Brest.

Its territory of nearly 11 km² is bordered by the coast of the English Channel, to the north, forming a peninsula between two abers (narrow bays made up of estuaries or advances of the sea inland): Aber-Wrac'h to the north and Aber-Benoît to the south.

The town itself is set back, and several important hamlets dot the coast and the few hills of the locality. It has a green character, crops and agricultural areas covering 52% of its area.

Landéda to which are attached several islands or islets, often accessible at low tide, was occupied from the Neolithic period, notably on Guenioc island where cairns (dolmens) have been unearthed, as well as tools dating from the Gallic period.

Later, the Aber-Wrac'h served as a natural shelter and became an important port of call slightly set back from the sea. It was protected by fortifications that Vauban reinforced in the 17th century.

Economic activity long confined to fishing, agriculture and seaweed collection was boosted in the 19th century by the arrival of the railway. Nowadays, there are about 3600 inhabitants on Landéda. Visitors and vacationers appreciate the picturesque heritage of the town but also and above all its coastline dotted with dunes, rocks, islets and beaches. Nautical activities such as hiking make people happy there all year round.

Things to see and do

A discovery of the local heritage can begin with the Notre-Dame-des-Anges abbey, near the eponymous beach, in the north of the territory. It was founded in 1507 on a site where pagan worship was once practiced. The monastery was first occupied by Cordeliers monks and then by Récollets. Damaged by fire at the end of the 17th century, transformed into an inn after the Revolution, the abbey was partly rebuilt in the 18th century and its buildings are organized around two courtyards, one of which housed the cloister. Both the church and the convent buildings are undergoing a long but patient renovation, the surrounding wall and the gardens having retained their original appearance. The charm and the exceptional environment of the site, listed in the Inventory, are worth the detour! Open from May to October. Guided tours. Price: 4 and 6 euros. Information on +33 2 98 04 86 48.

In the village, the parish church of Saint-Congar was rebuilt in 1846, and you will notice its semicircular arcades and the painted paneling in the choir. The building with its built-in bell tower houses a statue of the Virgin from the Notre-Dame-des-Anges abbey.

The Sainte-Marguerite chapel, rebuilt in 1851, houses polychrome wooden statues and the Troménec chapel, the only testimony to the manor of the same name erected in the 15th century, sports on its "west" gable a granite rosette formed of "quatrefeuille". It now houses the tomb of Simon de Troménec, and a recumbent figure. Finally, still on the religious level, the chapel of Brouennou (17th century, rebuilt in the 19th century), preserves relics and a statue of Saint Gouesnou (7th century), one of the evangelizers of the region, while the Gothic-style Saint-Antoine fountain (16th century) houses a statue of the saint.

The fort of Cézon, on the eponymous island, at the mouth of the Aber-Wrac'h, the manor of Kerzene (15th and 16th centuries), the turrets which housed the fires of La Palue (19th) or finally the Aber-Wrac'h semaphore, bought by the municipality to make it a cultural place and rare seaweed ovens are still to be mentioned.

In terms of culture, the Ecume des Mers media library hosts events (readings, exhibitions, conferences) thanks to a dedicated space of 300 m² extended by a garden. Contact on +33 2 98 30 83 85. As for the semaphore, its new vocation is to host exhibitions and meetings with artists. The site also marks a walk on the coastal path. Information on +33 2 98 04 94 66.

Not far from there, labeled port of heritage interest, the marina of Aber Wrac'h perpetuates the secular tradition of the locality. It has 222 pontoon berths, 70 of which are reserved for visitors. Close to bars, restaurants and shops, its facilities ensure a quality stopover (electricity water terminals, refueling station, slipway, etc.). Its access by sea is secure in all weathers. Information on +33 2 98 04 91 62. Note also that on the west of the town, the port of Vilh, on the Aber-Benoît, offers the possibility of moorings in a quieter environment, surrounded by oyster establishments. Contact on +33 6 19 87 75 39.

Landéda is also a major center in terms of nautical activities. The CVL sailing center is thus available to holidaymakers (with rental point and initiation cycles): join +33 2 98 04 90 64. We should also mention a kite-surfing and kite board school (contact on +33 6 31 79 52 41), a kayak club (info on 6 09 14 50 09), an association dedicated to diving (call +33 6 77 78 45 15) or even the Yach-club which organizes regattas from April to October (call +33 2 98 04 92 60).

It is also possible to discover the unique coastal environment of the locality via boat trips on speedboats: information on +33 2 98 04 05 43.

Several beaches await lovers of swimming and lazing around. The largest and perfectly secure are those of Sainte-Marguerite and the Baie des Anges, but we can also mention those of Broënnou, surrounded by dunes, of Kloukouri, which lends itself to shore fishing, and of Porz Matéano, appreciated for its intimate setting.

If athletes have access to numerous facilities (fields, gymnasiums), they can also have a skate park or reserve a tennis court with the local club on +33 6 24 03 48 73.

For hikers, in addition to the garden of hydrangeas near the port (one of the seven sites of the Terre d'Hortensias project), free admission, the protected natural sites (dunes of Sainte-Marguerite, marshes of Toul-an-Dour), the wood of Troénec (with fitness trail), and of course the coast offer unparalleled potential for discovering an exceptional environmental and sensitive setting while walking.

In the town itself, five thematic loops have been traced and marked out for walkers, to which are added a dozen paths on Landéda and the neighboring towns forming the Pays des Abers.

All this without counting the GR 34 (also known as the customs trail), but also, for two-wheelers, secure routes such as the Véloroute des Abers which connects Landéda to Brest (about 40 km).
