La Vallée

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Charente-Maritime

Located in the former province of Saintonge, in Charente-Maritime, the commune of La Vallée is located about fifty kilometers from La Rochelle, not far from Sainte-Radegonde, Cabariot or Saint-Hippolyte.

Of ancient origin, as evidenced by the numerous Neolithic stations found nearby, La Vallée has distinguished itself on several occasions in history, notably during the wars of religion or during the Fronde. In the second half of the 18th century, the town saw one of its castles also serve as a hospital for soldiers returning from the American War of Independence.

Today, it is mainly for its historical and architectural heritage that the city in western France is appreciated by visitors.

Things to see and do

Classified as a Historic Monument, the megalithic complex of Pierre Levée presents several Neolithic dolmens. Excavated numerous times during the 19th century, they notably revealed several fragments of pottery, as well as human jaws. According to a local legend, the site was born from the Holy Virgin who, by losing the stones of her apron, formed the dolmens still visible.

Don't forget to admire the 12th century Saint-Vivien church. A very beautiful Romanesque building listed as a Historic Monument, it reveals typical Saintonge architecture.

Today in ruins, the Château de Bergerie is a former feudal castle which served as a hospital for soldiers returning from the American War of Independence in the 18th century. It was completely destroyed in the 19th century.
