Additional information
La Roque-sur-Cèze

Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, La Roque-sur-Cèze is one of the jewels of the Gard. This charming little medieval village on a rocky outcrop stands near Bagnols-sur-Cèze, in the heart of the arrondissement of Nîmes.

The village developed around a castle built in the 12th century and was for a long time the stronghold of the Bishop of Uzès. Today, one can distinguish the old village of the new, built in the nineteenth century, at the bottom of the rocky peak. It takes place mostly on an area now classified natural area, offering unique landscapes to its visitors.

Full of charm with its architectural unit, the village of La Roque-sur-Cèze is one of the main tourist spots in the department of Gard. Its preserved nature and its calm environment have contributed much to this development over time.

Things to see and do

If the original castle has only simple vestiges on the village, one can still admire its old chapel. It was built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century and has a unique nave with a unique bell to overcome the gable. You can reach it by taking the charming cobbled streets of the village and admiring the stone houses in Genoese blues on the way.

Classified as Historic Monuments, the Charles-Martel Bridge was built, according to historians' estimates, between the XIIth and the XIVth century. Spanning the Cèze, it has no less than twelve arches.

Classified as natural areas, the cascades of the Sautadet are surely the most appreciated site of the tourists of passage by La Roque-sur-Cèze. This exceptional place makes it possible to discover the pots of giants, cylindrical cavities dug in the rock by the movement of water. Be careful though, because because of its situation, the site can prove dangerous if you approach too closely.

Several marked hiking trails, in and around the village, allow to appreciate the rich heritage of La Roque-sur-Cèze.
