The Château de l'Echelle is a monument that has had several lives. Raised at the very beginning of the 13th century, it fulfilled its military role throughout the Middle Ages before being modified in the 16th and 17th centuries for a long, more worldly and pleasant life, until 1973. After a brief period in the active life with a scrap dealer, it has been owned by the City of La Roche-sur-Foron since 1982 and is a cultural center appreciated by all.
In addition to being regularly open for art exhibitions and cultural events, it houses a learned society and its university library.
Laid out as a public promenade, its 4-hectare park with an incredible view of the Arve valley makes it a popular place for locals and visitors alike.
