La Capelle-et-Masmolène is a joint consists of the union of two geographically distinct villages, some 800 meters apart. An official document dated 1814 shows the two cities form a single county. Other sources trace the merger of the two entities in the 17th century. Yet every town still has its church, public building that housed school and town hall, castle, cemetery and water tower. Today, the town hall is located in a new building equidistant between La Capelle and Masmolène.
The castle and the village are included in the inventory of Scenic Sites Gard since 1970.
Capelle, with its 12th century castle, was, until the Revolution, the summer residence of the bishops of Uzès. Masmolène and dungeon, the last remnant of the Lord Adelard, has a Romanesque chapel of the 11th century, once included in the rampart. It was restored by a group of volunteers. The windmill, north of La Capelle, is also being restored and will soon be resettled its wings. It is expected to become a landscape observatory.
Both towns are nestled on the southern slope of a wooded hill, separated by a cluster of sandstone rocks and quartzites ocher and red colors. Part of rocky outcrops in La Capelle is equipped for climbing.
The pond of La Capelle (42 ha) with his horses, bulls, is home to many species of birds and some rare specimens of seedlings and amphibians (especially crested newt ). Protected by Natura 2000, it offers a unique landscape in the territory of the Uzege. Communal fishing is accessible to everyone, subject to take his fishing license at City Hall.
The castle, whose construction began in the nineteenth century, stands above the pond. Numerous subsequent architectural changes are visible on its façade: opening of the Renaissance windows, and over the following centuries. However, it retains its austere medieval silhouette. In 1975 the castle was the setting for the film Just Jaeckin, Histoire d'O.
The pond, Natura 2000 offers an exceptional landscape in the area of Uzège. Covering an area of 42 ha, with his horses, bullocks, it is home to numerous bird species and rare specimens of seedlings and amphibians (especially the great crested newt). A communal fishing is accessible to all the public, subject to take his at the town hall fishing card. A project is underway to achieve an interpretation trail around its perimeter and a bird observatory. It will be a secure route for travel in the various points of remarkable views, aimed at all audiences: scientists, families, school.
The climbing site: boulder clusters of sandstone and quartzite in ocher and red, it is partially equipped for climbing. Many enthusiasts frequent this site for the diversity of routes it offers, but also for the beauty of the landscape.
Masmolène atop the chapel of the Tower and its keep, the last vestiges of the Lord Adelard, date from the eleventh century. Formerly included in the wall, the chapel was restored by a volunteer association. Today it is a place open to visitors, offering an exceptional panoramic view of the landscape to the south. The chapel hosts regular musical events.
The windmill, north of La Capelle, was recently restored by a combination of passionate volunteers. It has wings now (but no longer works as a mill). The surrounding site was developed to accommodate visitors, it is good to come to picnic with family. This is a wonderful observatory of the landscape.
The municipality organizes every year many friendly and festive events, especially in summer. They take place in both parts of the Commons, in the squares.
Recently, the votive festival resumed its annual cycle on the last weekend of June. It 's basically a family- friendly atmosphere, punctuated by eating together on the Place de La Capelle.
At the music festival, music groups of the village produce the eve of the national day ( so as not to deprive the public protests in other cities ). Meal or barbecue are shared on the place Masmolène, throughout an afternoon where amateur and professional musicians succeed.
The night markets organized by the Tourist Board of the Community of communes of the Pays d' Uzes have a party every year on the golf balls Masmolène.
The many active associations in the village regularly organize garage sales, meals and other festive gatherings. The dates are decided over time.
