Known as the little Venice of Lozère, La Canourgue is perfect for a leisurely stroll, with its typical houses and many canals fed by the waters of the River Urugne, which give it an undeniable charm. A very pleasant village with lots of architectural features to see: Renaissance dwellings, timber-framed houses from the 14th century, the Clock Tower and the Collegiate Church of St. Martin, dating from the 12th century.

Additional information
La Canourgue

Opening onto the Lot valley, La Canourgue has an indefinable charm. It is an atypical city built following the path of a river. It is the city which is articulated around him and not the Urugne who adapted to the commune. It is its peculiarity to have respected the course of nature. In fact, the municipality has been given the sobriquet of "Little Venice lozérienne" rightly besides. In fact, many canals, bridges, bays and laundries dot the city, which is a unique architectural mix. High eighteenth-century houses shelter the looks of other older buildings folded in the hollow of the old city. But what marks the most is the Place du Pré Commun planted on either side of immense plane trees. The corbelled houses are still surprising. And all around the city, penetrating even to its heart, nature tranquil, omnipresent, alternating meadows and thick woods in a learned mixture. Nestled at the foot of the Causse du Sauveterre, the territory was occupied from Prehistory. In the ninth and tenth centuries, it was the construction of two castles which enabled the village to continue to prosper without being plundered or ravaged. It continued its development by taking advantage of the textile industry and the tannery to develop until the eighteenth century. Its activity is now oriented on tourism, as well as bio-agriculture and fish farming.

Things to see and do

The commune of La Canourgue united with those of Montjézieu, La Capelle and Auxillac in 1972 to create only one city. It is therefore on the old town of Montjézieu that a very beautiful building dating from the twelfth century: the eponymous castle. This castle, classified as a Historic Monument, dominates the Lot valley and is open to visits. You can take advantage of it to visit the village hanging on the rocky outcrop spreading at its feet. In Auxillac, the birthplace of Celeste Albaret, governess of Marcel Proust, is to be seen absolutely. This old mill was renovated in the inn in 1987 by the Town hall which had bought it so as not to leave this superb building abandoned. Also in the Historic Monuments, you can visit the Church of St. Martin. It was the home of the canons college in the year 1000. The sanctuary is still open today. This magnificent building is one of the most beautiful Romanesque sites in Gévaudan. And in the continuity of the religious patrimony, you can admire the very beautiful church of La Capelle, also classified as Historic Monuments. This small Romanesque church dates from the end of the 11th century and has an unheard-of charm. The rest of the visit will take you back a few years with the dolmen of Chardonnet. This megalithic block classified to the Historic Monuments will take you in the footsteps of the Neolithic men. Finally, a walk in the historic center of the medieval city will close your visit.
