Surrounded by pine forests and perched proudly on its cliff, La Cadière-d'Azur is a totally charming Provençal village in Var. What does it offer? Its rich medieval past, its location overlooking the Bandol vineyard and its incredible view of the Paluns plain, the Sainte-Baume Massif and the Mediterranean Sea.

Fall in love with its pretty streets, narrow, sloping and adorned with flowers, its old dwellings, fountains, Clock Tower and remains of the ramparts including three doors: the Porte de la Colle, Porte Mazarine and Porte Saint-Jean. The latter dates from medieval times and still has its wooden leaves.

Take a little walk to the 16th-century Church of St. Andrew, whose hexagonal bell tower contains the oldest bell in the department of Var. If you appreciate old buildings, La Cadière-d'Azur also has several chapels.

Along the winding streets, craft shops invite you to discover all the skills of the region. The village is also the starting point for several walks to the heart of the AOP Bandol vineyard.

Additional information
La Cadière-d'Azur

Fortified town facing Le Castellet, La Cadière-d'Azur flourishes in the midst of vines holding the Côte de Provence appellation, AOC Bandol.

La Cadière-d'Azur seems to have been occupied since prehistoric times because of the cut flint found on site. It was at this time that commercial activity developed with the first Massaliotes and Etruscan ceramics. The first written record mentioning it dates back to 977. The village huddles around the castle and the chapel. A double rampart protects the city from attacks. Today, the village has retained its medieval character. Its proximity to the beaches also makes it a popular tourist spot.

Things to see and do

The old stones have found a perfect refuge in this medieval village to bear witness to the traces of the past. On the program of the visit, you will be able to discover the different gates of the village: the Saint-Jean gate, the La Colle gate and the Mazarine gate. When you go up the small cobbled lane, the rue Auguste Charlois overlooked by the houses of yesteryear, you will have the impression of going back in time and walking in the footsteps of the villagers of yesteryear. Once you arrive at the Clock Tower, the imposing structure invites you to explore it. The religious heritage is also well supplied. Between the Saint-Jean chapel, the Saint-Côme chapel, the Sainte-Anne chapel and the Sainte-Magdeleine chapel, you will be spoiled for choice. You will also not fail to visit the Saint-André church.

La Cadière-d'Azur can be visited for its rich historical heritage, but also for the variety of craftsmen installed on site and who welcome you in their workshops. You will be able to enter the artistic world of a workshop of textiles, jewelry with pearls, painting, leather and restoration of Provençal costumes. What will put you in your eyes!

The walk continues through the Maison du Terroir et du Patrimoine, where you can admire, among other things, a geological, archaeological and cultural exhibition. This is also where you can register for thematic hikes that will take you to discover the natural heritage of La Cadière-d'Azur. You can also choose to put on your hiking boots and follow one of the many routes offered on the outskirts of the village in the communal forest or along the GR51. The more athletic can try out the sports course in the forest. You can immerse yourself in tasting local dishes by going to the Jas de Clare goat farm or the Bas Varoise brasserie. And for a moment of relaxation, the public garden welcomes you for a short stop on its shaded benches.

The wine heritage is also on the menu of your stay. Many estates open the doors of their vineyards and cellar to you to discover the culture of grapes and taste a good wine.
