The Étang de Pirot leisure center is located in the commune of Isle-et-Bardais, in the Allier department, 8 km south-east of Ainay-le-Château.
It is located on the edge of the Étang de Pirot, a 78 hectare body of water created in the middle of the 19th century thanks to a dam on the Marmande to supply the Berry canal. The pond is also fed by the Goutte d'Argent stream and the Thiolais stream. Since 1957, the Berry canal has been disused: the body of water has changed its purpose and now plays the role of flood limiter, and its usual level of 14 m thus drops to almost 12 m in autumn and winter.
Located in the heart of the Tronçais national forest, the pond has the status of private property, and is therefore not in the public domain: swimming and water activities (canoeing, pedal boats, etc.) are not authorized there..
On the other hand, adjoining a campsite, the base is a paradise for fishermen. However, regulations must be scrupulously respected in terms of calendar, practices (nature of fish caught) and location. A map is obligatory (sold at the campsite, in the village or from the tourist offices in the region)...
The body of water is known to be rich in carp, bream, roach and predators.
The site has also become an essential point for hiking enthusiasts who enjoy a green environment protected for its biodiversity (fauna and flora). The route around the body of water is 7.7 km long, or two hours of walking. For mountain bikes, other loops are possible from the leisure center and the campsite (but they are not authorized on the banks).
