Irouléguy

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques

A wine-growing village in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Irouléguy is located about fifty kilometers from Bayonne, not far from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Ispoure or Caro.

Former stronghold of the kingdom of Navarre, Irouléguy is cited as early as the 14th century. The town has distinguished itself in history for its wine-growing activity, particularly with its eponymous AOC. It is one of the smallest vineyards in France, the only one in the French Basque country.

An interesting architectural and historical heritage completes the offer of this charming village.

Things to see and do

Passing through Irouléguy, you can discover the Arrondo and Artxuita dolmens. Built on the eastern escarpment of the Jarra mountain, these Neolithic buildings are classified as Historic Monuments. A gatzelu zahar, a protohistoric stronghold, is also visible nearby.

The religious heritage of Irouléguy is also not lacking in charm, notably with the Saint-André chapel from the 12th century and rebuilt in the 17th century. The Saint-Vincent church dates from the end of the 19th century. It takes place on the remains of a first building from the mid-Middle Ages.

In the adjoining cemetery, it is possible to discover funerary slabs as well as discoidal steles.

Events and festivities

In September, the Irouléguy vineyard festival takes place with its various events and tastings.

In October, the town hosts certain events of the Points de vue street art festival co-organized by the City of Bayonne and the Basque Country Community.
