Park Sainte-Claire

Leisure centre in Hyères

Parc Sainte-Claire is located at Hyères, in the Var. It is next to the Castel of the same name, a house built in 1849 by Olivier Voutier, naval officer and renowned archaeologist: he was the discoverer of the Venus de Milo in 1820 during a mission in the Cyclades. The residence was then built on the foundations of a former convent occupied by the Poor Clares, dating from the 17th century.

The property was then the winter residence of the American novelist Edith Wharton from 1920 to 1937. It was she who arranged the botanical garden: many exotic species were thus chosen to compose this vast landscaped park of 6,500 m², on the heights of the city, from which one enjoys a breathtaking view of the harbor.

The whole was acquired in 1955 by the municipality. The Castel, in a rather fanciful neo-Romanesque style, is made available to the Port-Cros National Park, which houses its administrative services. Labeled Remarkable Garden, the park is however accessible to the public.

Open daily. Free entrance. Information on +33 4 94 01 84 50.
