Harnes is a city in Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region, 5 kilometers north-east of Lens.

Already inhabited before our era, its territory initially composed of marshes is then conducive to the cultivation of cereals, including linseed for the production of oil.

Depending on the Ghent Abbey, the village was not spared by invasions and then by wars, but its history rocked in the second half of the nineteenth century with the discovery and then the extraction of coal. Wells are exploited and workers' cities are built.

The city which has more than 5600 inhabitants before 1914 is devastated by the First war. It was completely rebuilt in the 1920s and the mining activity started again. High place of the Resistance during the Second World War, Harnes approached 15,000 inhabitants in the 1960s as the decline of the coal industry began. The wells are closed in 1966 and 1973.

An economic mutation has been initiated, and a major business area has been developed, where more than 2,000 employees are now employed.

Rich in preserved economic and historical heritage, Harnes has also protected its natural spaces and shows a certain cultural dynamism. The city, about 12,300 inhabitants today, is worth visiting during a stay in the region.

Things to see and do

Testimonies of the mining past of the city are obviously essential to begin a discovery tour of Harnes.

A slag heap and numerous dwellings in the Bellevue city (working-class district) have thus been selected from the sites of the mining basin inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

It is also the case, in this same city Bellevue, of the chapel of the Sacred Heart, a neo-Gothic building in red bricks of the nineteenth century.

For visit itineraries focused on the mining heritage and in particular the sites registered with UNESCO, documentation and information on +33 3 21 08 72 72 or +33 3 21 67 66 66.

In the city center, to see also, the church of Saint-Martin, with massive architecture, with its brick exteriors, and adorned with an imposing bell tower. It was built in 1923.

The industrial history of the city is also traced to the Museum of the School and Mine, built since 1981 on the site of the school Diderot. It reveals an evocation of the public education of yesteryear (with possible animations like a dictation in the fashion of yesteryear), a collection of photos of classes, and in another space of the building, permanent exhibitions dedicated to the history of the mines (techniques, daily life of the "black mouths") are presented. A period café has also been restored. Free admission. Open Tuesdays and Thursdays afternoons and by appointment. Information on +33 3 21 75 38 97.

To visit also, the museum of history and archeology of the city, created in 1926 and since 1971 installed in the former property of André Deprez who was deputy mayor of the town. There are collected and presented the military collections that had gathered veterans and archaeological objects unearthed at Harnes. The museum has become a place of memory dedicated to the two world conflicts and archeology. Two rooms are specifically dedicated to the Second World War and the Resistance in the region. Note that the establishment has recently benefited from a renovation of its museum to highlight its collections. Free admission. Open Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and by appointment. Information on +33 3 21 49 02 29.

Always on the cultural level, the center Jacques-Prévert program shows, shows and cinema sessions. Information on +33 3 21 76 21 09.

A discovery of the city also passes by the Wood of Florimond, a space of seven hectares which was built on an old mining pit and its surroundings. The Bois is home to a wastewater lagoon and has been the subject of landscaping work that has now allowed the revival of an entire ecosystem with exceptional flora and fauna. Dotted with water points, the Wood is crossed by trails.

This example of reconversion of the landscape as the whole of the city and its surroundings can be the object of excursions on foot or VTT. Documentation and information on +33 3 21 67 66 66.

For athletes, a skate park is available near the Mimoun complex, where you can also practice indoor football.

To play a game of tennis at the Borotra complex, contact the local club on +33 3 21 49 77 79.

The Marius-Leclercq pool located in the city center has a 25-meter pool. Entry: 2.40 and 3.10 euros. Information on +33 3 21 13 96 00.

Finally, fishing enthusiasts can contact the local association to learn about the regulations and sites adapted to +33 3 21 49 63 42.
