Small town in Eure, in the Normandy region, Harcourt takes place in the natural region of the Neubourg countryside. It is located not far from Brionne and Bernay, around thirty kilometers from Évreux or Rouen.
Original stronghold of the ducal family of Harcourt, one of the oldest noble families in France and England, the village takes its name from the Latin Hariulfi Curtis, meaning the domain of Harolf. This would be proof of a possible occupation of the territory during the Carolingian era.
An important tourist destination in Upper Normandy, Harcourt reveals to its visitors an exceptional architectural and natural heritage.
Listed as a Historic Monument, the castle of Harcourt originally dates from the 12th century but underwent numerous transformations in the 14th, 16th and 17th centuries. This old fortified castle, a very fine example of medieval architecture, has retained a very large part of its original structure. Today it takes the form of a vast exterior curtain wall and a castle with twin entrance towers and an uncrowned keep.
On site, it is possible to admire one of the oldest arboretums in France created at the beginning of the 19th century. Labeled Remarkable Garden, it notably reveals a twisting beech tree.
As you stroll through the town, don't forget to admire the 12th century Saint-Ouen church. Listed as a Historic Monument, it has an original choir and bell tower, as well as a 16th century facade. The Saint-Ouen church also has a 16th century almshouse with painted decoration.
The town hall, listed as a Historic Monument, is also worth a detour. A former market hall from the end of the Middle Ages, it became property of the municipality in the 19th century.
The commune also has the Notre-Dame-du-Parc priory from the 13th century, of which the remains of an underground crypt remain and two square buildings, the Château des Rufflets, the Château de Beauficel or the old train station from the 19th century..
Every year around May 1, the city organizes its medieval events with camps set up in the heart of the arboretum, ancient games, craft workshops and other activities for young and old.
A fireworks display is organized every year on July 14 on the occasion of the national holiday.
