Gorron

Gorron is located on the borders of Pays de la Loire, Brittany and Normandy. The city is ideally located: 1h15 from Mont-Saint-Michel, 1h from Rennes, 2h30 from the Loire châteaux and at the foot of the Normandie-Maine Natural Park.

Gorron is renowned for its leisure, cultural and sports activities. It has all the facilities of a large city (900-seat performance hall, cinema, swimming pool, theater, sports hall, weight room, sports equipment, shops, etc.) within walking distance.

Menhir de la Roche:

Dating from 4000 BC, the menhir, classified as a Historic Monument, is located near the Roche farm where it gave his name. With an imposing and monumental appearance, the raised stone measures 4.40 m in height. A legend has it that, on Christmas night, during the stroke of midnight, the stone turns twelve times on itself while the cows kneel…

Access on the D5, connecting Gorron to Brecé, by the dirt road leaving from Bourdaiserie, opposite the supermarket.

Saint-Martin Church - 19th century:

The church was rebuilt from 1868 to 1874 on the plans of Monsignor Théberge, architect in Avranches. Consecrated on July 12, 1877, the neo-Romanesque style building, with a dark and imposing interior appearance, due to low aisles. One will notice among others the altarpiece represents the stoning of Saint-Etienne.

Notre Dame du Bignon Chapel - 19th century:

Initially dedicated to Saint Jacques, the chapel rises on an eminence located in the Bignon district. It houses a statue of the Virgin and Child which has regained its place after the revolutionary turmoil, in the current chapel rebuilt in the 19th century. People came to pray at the Rogations, the Assumption and during great perils, such as those of the two world wars.

Town hall:

Erected in 1868, the town hall will replace the old wooden halls, a view of which, dated 1865, shows the construction. The neoclassical-style octagonal building amazes visitors with its originality. The halls are mainly designed for the market, one of the liveliest in Bas-Maine. They were open with bays on several sides to allow easier arrival of goods. A short-circuit will devastate them in 1921.
The reconstruction of the building will be done on the site of the old one but without the halls. The bays will be closed and the administrative services will be installed on the ground floor. On the 1st floor, a performance hall is fitted out. It will give way to a cinema in the twentieth century. During the Second World War, the town hall will serve as a hospital.

Logis du château - Middle Ages:

The very first château will be built on what is now Butte Saint Laurent in the 9th century. After multiple acquisitions, it will be moved and rebuilt on a space located between the current rue de Bretagne and the chemin des Chauvinettes. Henry II of England was in fact Count of Maine at this time. He was born in Le Mans to Geoffrey V le Bel, known as Geoffroi Plantagenêt, and to Mathilde, daughter of King Henry I of England. The two lines of fortification of the castle surrounded the city. They will still be visible a few centuries later. Old houses in the city have preserved vaulted cellars with bases and elements of military architecture from the 11th century. During the Hundred Years War, the city and the castle were sacked on several occasions. The still visible tower is a 15th century reconstruction. It is more of a home than a defense tower.

Manoir de la Renardière - 15th century - Butte Saint-Laurent:

La Renardière is located near the old feudal mound between the mound and the lake. The main building has an octagonal tower enclosing a spiral staircase. It is undoubtedly the residence, then larger, of a lord: the tearing of stones to the left of the tower makes it possible to imagine the extension then existing. On the right, the frame is a reconstruction of the 19th century.

Arcaded house - Towards the 17th century:

Of all the houses of this type still listed in the 1835 land register on the town hall square, the Notre-Dame hotel is the last that remains. These mansions had two or more granite arches supported by pillars and included street gables often made of wood.

House known as "the four pillars" - 16th century:

Formerly, the corbelled facade was supported by four stone pilasters of square section. The rear facade is pierced with a Gothic-style two-lobed door. The interior includes large fireplaces and an octagonal tower with a spiral staircase leading to the upper floors.

Sculpted stone - 1681:

Many houses in the city have sculptures or inscriptions on the lintels of the doors. The oldest has a crescent and a star, this motif evoking the return of the Crusades. We will also notice sculpted heads in the corner of certain houses (1 rue des Sarrazins and Cour des Forges).

Many washhouses are still visible on the banks of the river, between rue du Maine and rue Jean-Jacques Garnier.

Former prison - 18th century:

The building is made up of two distinct parts: the prison and the first town hall. The prison has two dungeons and a room on the ground floor. The old town hall has preserved a monumental fireplace with granite shield. The municipalities were created during the Revolution but the first Municipal Council did not have any building. After a few years above the covered market, the town bought the Halle aux grains, the Grande Halle, an alley, the prison and two gardens, on October 9, 1820. The prison of Gorron allows the imprisonment of the condemned, probably before their departure for Ernée.

Chemin Montais (or Montois) - From the 11th century: The pilgrimage route led from Mans to Mont-Saint-Michel. The main road was joined by secondary routes. One of them crossing Gorron, gave its name to the rue Montoise and bypassed the old castle before crossing the ford on the Colmont.
Hiking trails: Gorron has 24 km of hiking / mountain biking trails.
