Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Lot

Girac is a commune in the Lot region of Occitan, 11 km northwest of Saint-Cere.

The territory of the locality of 4.4 km ² is contained in a peninsula upstream of the confluence between the river Cère and the Dordogne, which forms the limit with the department of Corrèze.

Composed of a village and several hamlets, the town is ideally located on the borders of major tourist and cultural regions, Périgord, Quercy and the west of the Massif Central.

Until the Revolution, the parish is linked to that of Bonneviole (now Prudhommat) where are then located a hospital and a leprosarium dedicated to pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Taking advantage of the boat traffic of the Dordogne, Girac has long been a rural village famous for growing tobacco and walnuts.

Close to many sites of great tourist interest, the village of about 380 inhabitants, on the banks of the Dordogne, is now popular with holidaymakers.

Things to see and do

The Saint-Martin church is the major heritage site of the small town. The presence of freestone at the level of the masonry demonstrates that its bases are very old, but the nave and part of the aisles are dated to the 15th century. The chapel "north" was added in the sixteenth century and new changes were made in the nineteenth: the chapel "south" and its span forming a new aisle were then built, and a square steeple adorned with openwork berries was erected. Also worthy of note is the interior stained glass window dated 1925. This church was once a dependency of Castelnau-Bretenoux castle, a few kilometers south of Girac.

To see also during a walk in the town, old half-timbered houses with picturesque charm, dovecotes (especially on the hamlet of Serre), and bread ovens where we still love to cook. bread or cakes during the festive meetings that mark out the year.

In terms of sports and leisure activities, thanks to its location, Girac is synonymous with beautiful walks on the shady banks of the Dordogne but also other nautical pleasures.

Thus, a base along the watercourse offers rental of canoe-kayak, but also bicycles. In season, children can have access to an acrobranche course and a space dedicated to paintball and laser game. Information on +33 6 30 87 66 65.
