Located between the park of Saint-Cloud and the wood of Saint-Cucufa, the commune of Garches takes place in Île-de-France, in the department of Hauts-de-Seine. Residential and bourgeois city, it is about ten kilometers from Paris, in the western suburbs.
Mentioned from the eleventh century in the texts of history, the town of Garches was particularly developed in the eighteenth century, notably thanks to the expansion of its vines. Former wine village, it takes its current face with the arrival of the railway, in the nineteenth century.
Between the old secondary mansions and the traditional architecture of the Ile de France, Garches reveals to its visitors a historical heritage revealing its evolution over the centuries. The city of Paris also benefits from the many green spaces that surround it and bring it a special charm.
The Saint-Louis church began its construction as early as the canonization of Saint Louis, in the thirteenth century, becoming the first in France dedicated to the famous king. Partially destroyed during the Battle of Buzenval, it was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, revealing its present appearance. Inside, the bell which dates from the end of the XVIIIth century has been classified to the Historic Monuments. Be sure to admire the recently renovated nineteenth-century stained-glass windows that unveil the major stages of Saint Louis's life.
The town hall of Garches takes place in the old Civiale Castle, a mansion surrounded by a park of more than 15 hectares. The building was renovated and enlarged at the end of the 20th century.
The former hospice Brézin now hosts the Louis Pasteur school. Built in the first half of the 19th century, it has seen its facades, roofs and chapel classified as Historic Monuments.
As you walk through the worker's quarters of Dr. Debat, built near the laboratories of the same name in the late 1940s, you can admire some houses still adorned with frescoes by Clément Serveau.
The Parc des Quatre Vents grounds reveal gardens classified as Outstanding Gardens. The main house, still standing, hosts the Municipal Conservatory of music, dance and drama, as well as the recreation center of the town.
The golf of Saint-Cloud, full of charm and greenery, allows to train on a course of great quality.
The market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays morning. A Christmas market is also organized at the end of the year.
La Garchoise is a handi-valid pedestrian relay race that takes place in June.
As of July 14th, Garches proposes its fireworks and its popular ball.
The festival of Garches unveils its animations in September, at the same time as the forum of associations.
In October, the city welcomes its motor show.
The loops of Garches are a race taking place in October. On the program, a circuit of 10 km and a relay of 2 x 5 km.
