Cathedral Saint-Léonce

Monument in Fréjus

The Saint-Léonce cathedral of Fréjus, in the Var, is located in the historic center of the city.

Listed as a Historic Monument since 1862, its history and architecture as we know it today reflect the city's rich but tormented past.

In fact, the presence of a bishop at Fréjus was mentioned as early as 375 at the Council of Valence. The Christian community in this former Roman stronghold is sufficiently powerful that at the beginning of the 5th century, a baptistery (under Merovingian art) and the first cathedral were erected. It is then a room with apses, columns with Corinthian style angles, the whole opening onto a floor.

After a troubled period (pirate raids, Saracen invasions), in the 11th century, a new bishop and a college of canons initiated the construction of new buildings, including a two-storey cloister with very rich galleries in terms of decor. At the same time the city is fortified and the episcopal city itself is protected by walls and dominated by a tower crowned with machicolations.

Finally, after the Revolution, during which the site was badly affected, the episcopal palace was rebuilt from 1823. Later, the cloister and the cathedral complex were also raised and restored between 1920 and 1932.

The cloister and the baptistery (still "operational" for baptisms in immersion) now belong to the National Monuments.

As for the cathedral church, it consists of two adjoining naves and includes stalls and an altarpiece from the 15th century.

Other elements to note include the walnut door leaves from 1530, the 13th century bell tower which surmounts the narthex and numerous sculpted decorative elements.

The site hosts festivals in summer dedicated to organs and baroque music. Activities are also organized by the National Monuments Center.
