Important city in northern France, Fourmies is situated in Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy region in the Northern Department. It takes place about thirty kilometers from Maubeuge, and about ten kilometers from the Belgian border. The town is part of the Regional Natural Park of Avesnois.
Fourmies take its name from the Latin meaning Formeias swamp. This relates to the wet natural environment of the municipality. Occupied since the Roman times, the site was long known for its important wool industry. The activity declining in the late twentieth century, the city has turned primarily towards tourism.
