Important city in northern France, Fourmies is situated in Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy region in the Northern Department. It takes place about thirty kilometers from Maubeuge, and about ten kilometers from the Belgian border. The town is part of the Regional Natural Park of Avesnois.

Fourmies take its name from the Latin meaning Formeias swamp. This relates to the wet natural environment of the municipality. Occupied since the Roman times, the site was long known for its important wool industry. The activity declining in the late twentieth century, the city has turned primarily towards tourism.

Fourmies has a rich cultural heritage reflecting the illustrious past of the city and its desire to revitalize.

The museum of Avesnois is the largest museum in the town. It spans no fewer than four sites across several cities in the area. Fourmies welcomes in this respect on textile museum and society. He stands in a former mill built in 1847 and peaked in the late nineteenth century. The museum has several collections including offers to discover reconstructions of workshops.

Events and festivities

Alive and still going strong, the city of Fourmies is the origin of several events attracting large numbers of visitors every year.

The market is held every Saturday morning.

During the last weekend of the school year, the city offers frame (s), a publishing festival and creation.

Between the second and third weekend in July, Fourmies organizes its carnival.

Every year in September since 1928, the city hosts the Grand Prix Fourmies, a professional cycling race.
