New commune created on January 1, 2016, Vexin-sur-Epte takes place in the heart of Normandy, in the department of Eure. Composed of the old communes of Berthenonville, Bus-Saint-Rémy, Cahaignes, Cantiers, Stretchers, Dampsmesnil, Ecos, Fontenay-en-Vexin, Forest-la-Folie, Fourges, Fours-in-Vexin, Guitry, Panilleuse, and Tourny, it is located about fifty kilometers from Evreux, in the triangle Gisors - Les Andelys - Vernon.

Recent, the town of Vexin-sur-Epte nevertheless reveals a rich and fascinating history thanks to its many ancient villages. The territory was particularly illustrated at the beginning of the thirteenth century with the founding of the Royal Abbey of Our Lady of the Treasury, or by the various castles that were built over the centuries.

Even today, the new town welcomes many visitors wishing to discover the rich architectural and cultural heritage that makes up this Norman city.

Things to see and do

While strolling in the old commune of Ecos, do not miss to admire the church Saint-Denis, as well as the old hall.

Berthenonville has a rich architectural heritage, like the Saint-Ouen church listed as an historic monument. Private property, the castle of the nineteenth century also deserves attention. Do not forget to admire the cross of the cemetery of the seventeenth century, or the water mill of the eighteenth century. The church, the cemetery, the war memorial and the three chestnut trees that surround it represent a classified site.

Bus-Saint-Rémy still houses today the remains of the Royal Abbey of Our Lady of the Treasury. Founded in the 13th century by Raoul de Bus, it is one of the last Cistercian settlements in Normandy. You can still discover the ruins of the abbey church and the monial building, the home of the abbess, the home of the guests, the enclosure, and the gardens. The portal of the entry, monumental, is also still present. The whole is classified with the Historical Monuments. Do not miss the 16th and 17th century Bus Manor, listed as a Historic Monument, and the remains of the Baudemont castle.

Listed site, the castle of Cahaignes dates from the seventeenth century. In limestone, cut stone and plaster, it is included in the general inventory of cultural heritage. You can also discover the Requiécourt castle, from the 19th century, listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage and converted into bed and breakfast, or the churches of St. Andrew and Notre Dame rebuilt in the nineteenth century.

Listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage, the castle of Aveny, Dampsmesnil, dates from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Classified as Historical Monuments, the covered alley dates from the Neolithic and is more than ten meters long. You will also appreciate the Aveny bridge, on the Epte, built in the 18th and 19th centuries and classified as an historic monument.

Birthplace and holiday resort in the seventeenth century Guillaume Amfrye de Chaulieu, libertine poet, Castle Beauregard is revealed in Fontenay-en-Vexin, as the church Notre-Dame.

Fourges has an interesting architectural heritage with its mill in a classified site, its barrel still visible on the wash, its church of Saint-Pierre of the twelfth and fourteenth century listed historical monument, or his chapel Saint-Germain.

Listed as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Sauveur Church of Fours-en-Vexin dates from the thirteenth, fourteenth and sixteenth centuries and houses several tombstones of the lords of Ovens. One can also see on the town a castle of the nineteenth century, a manor of the sixteenth century, a house of the eighteenth century, and a farm of the seventeenth century.

The Notre-Dame de Tourny church is listed as a historical monument.

Classified site, the valley of the Epte offers many hiking trails to browse the local flora and fauna. Do not miss the forest of Vernon and its abundant nature.

Events and festivities

A farmers' market is proposed the first Saturdays of each month in Ecos. A Christmas market is also proposed in December.

Fourges hosts the International Large Format Painting Contest every weekend of the third week of June as part of the Normandy Impressionist Festival.

In September, every third weekend of the month, Tourny organizes the feast of St. Matthew with a funfair, a fireworks and a parade in the streets.

A concert is given in the church of Notre-Dame de Tourny the third weekend of October by the fanfare of Tourny.
