The castle of Fougères-sur-Bièvre is located in the eponymous village of Fougères-sur-Bièvre, now part of the new commune of Le Controis-en-Sologne, in Loir-et-Cher, 15 km south of Blois.

It was built in its current form from 1475, overlooking the course of the Bièvre, replacing a first castle of the 11th century destroyed in 1356 during the Hundred Years War. Only the keep had been preserved.

Unlike many castles in the region, it takes the form of a medieval fortified castle with Renaissance elements. The walls are made of hard limestone rubble from Beauce, but a softer, white stone, tufa from the banks of the Cher, was used for the molded or sculpted parts.

Owned in the 15th century by the treasurer of King Louis XI Pierre de Refuge, it was acquired after the Revolution by René Lambot, the king's former secretary, and his descendants set up a spinning mill on the site which operated until 1890.

Acquired by the State in 1932, restored, however, it has only been slightly altered compared to its original architecture.

Note the rampart walk and the machicolation of the north facade which rests on the keep and a second round tower, and the entrance door, still fortified, framed by two towers on the curtain wall. It overlooks a courtyard lined with buildings adorned with sculpted decorations. The lodgings, the four-storey west wing, date from the 15th century. On the other hand, an arcaded gallery with rich decorations (pilasters, capitals) is characteristic of the Renaissance (16th century). At that time, the keep was pierced with windows.

A medieval-style garden with raised beds and chestnut trees borders the Bièvre.

The castle is now managed by the Center des monuments nationaux.

Educational workshops, among other activities, are scheduled during school holidays.

Open every day (except Tuesdays from September to May), and closed on January 1, May 1, November 1 and 11 and December 25. Price: from 5 and 6 euros. Information on +33 2 54 20 27 18.
