- Location:
- Summer resort, resort ranked ski and mountaineering by Decree of 1969, in the center of the Savoy Alps, Flumet occupies the heart of this high valley in the region of Mont Blanc.
- There's Arly passes peacefully from its source above Megève Flumet up, the old walled city which, with its castle built on a rocky spur at the confluence of the Arly and Arrondine, marked the southern end of Faucigny.
- Between Flumet Megeve and we appreciate the delicious attardements offered the road "in the world's most stylish and what is the most ornate" according to Jacques Lovie, President of the Society Savoisienne of History and Archaeology. The Mont Blanc grows wonderfully with all its needles in the East to the North, the Aravis prepares its rocks up to nearly 3000 meters with its famous col paving the way Thônes, Annecy and Geneva. In the South, forest, pastures and plateaus lead to the Saisies and the Beaufortain. In the West, a major rupture is marked by the Arly gorges. This central location in the heart of the Alps, privileged by its environment and its average altitude, earned Flumet and Val d'Arly Mont Blanc to be a center for excursions and hiking in summer desired.
- History:
- It's between 1150 and 1200 that is built the city of Flumet, huddled around its castle. A wall flanked by four towers protected it; Flumet thus protected the South Access Faucigny. Aimont II, sire of Faucigny, resided in the castle Flumet part of the year of the political, economic and policy led him to favor in 1202 from the development of a small town in which he granted franchises Municipal from 1228. Flumet is the first town of Savoy to have obtained such franchises which corresponded to a genuine autonomy for the time, property rights, inheritance rights for the citizens of Flumet, use of pastures, rivers, woods and forests, exemption from toll and size, right build kilns and mills. Peace and security were guaranteed to all merchants traveling to Flumet, right to a court composed of 12 members from among the bourgeois and of never having a judge, a priest, a collector and a herald who have been elected by them in the assembly of all the Commune ... The founding charter of Flumet in 1228 was also a real little penal code: it is considered the source of law of Fribourg (Switzerland). Flumet charter and franchises were repeatedly confirmed, improved, developed until the 15th century. However, by 1202, the city has a contract and a hall. Flumet becomes and remains a center of commerce and trade alive, enabling merchants with typical activities such industry hides and materials for which were leased to the poles "pellissiers". For centuries the trade will be done mostly with Megève, Sallanches, the valley of the Arve and Thônes. Flumet and prosper until the 15th century.
- In 1421 the repairs required by the castle would increase the opposition between the city and the command whose inhabitants blamed the burgesses of the city privileges. Noble families have marked the history of Flumet: note particularly the Earls of Bieux (or Counts of Flumet), which left their roles and titles since the first of Peter Knight Bieux in 1205 until the death of John Noble Bieux in 1822 ... More than 600 years of sharing the lives of Flumet. Nobles and Châtelains Riddes, from the 14th century also played an important role to Flumet: much is in the church they had with a plébainie. This family provides several knights to the Order of Malta in the 16th and 17th century. The presence and activity of religion is marked by a priest from the first 1202 soon joined by other priests. In 1390 the parish of Flumet becomes independent. In 1628 it is a plébainie with 7 priests along with their parish priest who became archpriest plébain from 1759.
- In 1822 the parish of Flumet is attached to the diocese of Annecy, which has not changed since. 1679 was a dramatic year for Flumet. Indeed that year a fire destroyed the heart of the city. Wooden roof (ancelles) would not allow to limit the damage which burned the castle also. Only buildings outside walls are spared. From 1682, an order of the Chamber of Accounts allowed residents Flumet concerned, to rebuild their houses using stones from the wall and those of the castle. Building foundations are dominating the Arly at the time of the origins of Flumet.
- In 1860, when the annexation of Savoy to France, administrative boundaries, contrary to history, geography, and dominant economy, cut in half (for a limited North-South) unfounded, the ancient manor of Flumet, Canton Township and Flumet Megeve. Thus the real human and economic entity of Val d'Arly is torn between the departments of Haute-Savoie and Savoie for over 140 years ...
- From the late 19th to the years 1929-1930, is exploited in many Flumet slate. It is an activity which, thanks to the massive reconstruction of the "post 14/18", was living several hundred workers slate. From the end of the 19th is also growing summer tourism, in terms of passengers and soon the sojourners. The Grand Hotel du Mont Blanc dates from this period and was the only hotel between Chamonix and Albertville. Winter sports is vital as, between 1950 and 1960 to Flumet.
- Traditions and specialties: animal husbandry and agriculture are a very important place in the region. The Val d'Arly was awarded the label and Landscape Products Reconquest by the Ministry of Environment. Flumet product Reblochon Reblochon farmer and fruit. It also manufactures, handmade, curing: sausages and hams.
