Charming little medieval village in Aude, in the Occitanie region, Fanjeaux takes place about thirty kilometers from the famous citadel of Carcassonne. Firmly attached to its rocky outcrop, this historic landmark in Lauragais is located in the heart of the Cathar country, not far from Villesiscle, Brézilhac or La Cassaigne.
Of Roman origin, Fanjeaux took place at the crossroads of the communication routes between the Pyrenees and the Black Mountain and between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, which for a long time made it a strategic place of defense. Center of preaching against Catharism in the 13th century, the village experienced destruction in the 14th century by the armies of the Black Prince. Quickly rebuilt, the town subsequently experienced prosperity thanks to its culture of pastel.
Today a Mecca for tourism in Cathar country, the village of Fanjeaux lives between agricultural and leisure activities.
