Val-du-Maine

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Mayenne

Town news of Mayenne in Pays de la Loire, Val-du-Maine sits on the edge of the Sarthe, about thirty kilometers from Laval and close to Sable-sur-Sarthe. She was born on 1 January 2017 from the merger of Ballée and Epineux-Seguin.

Rural community has always Val-du-Maine turned to agriculture and livestock since the creation of the two villages of origin. After a relatively peaceful history, she finds herself more agitated at the time of the French Revolution, especially with the performance of Mayor Ballée and his wife by the troops of the Chouans.

Today, the city attracts visitors with its natural charm and unspoilt landscapes, but also by the great interest of its historical and architectural heritage.

Things to see and do

Built of limestone, marble and terracotta, St. Peter and St. Paul Church Thorny-le-Seguin dates from the second half of the eighteenth century. However, it is still possible to admire Romanesque elements of the twelfth century, like the apse and the bell tower. Inside we discover with pleasure a chapel dedicated to Saint Louis, a high altar altarpiece decorated with a painting of the eighteenth century depicting the Adoration of the Magi, or statues of the eighteenth. Registered Historic Monument, St. Catherine's Priory Varennes-the Children was founded in the early thirteenth century. Still visible today, it reveals a chapel including three altars and a statue of the Virgin in painted earth. Be sure not to admire the facades of the castle of Varennes-l'Enfant or go to the cave Raymond.

Built in the eleventh century, the Saint-Sulpice church Ballée was largely rebuilt in the eighteenth and nineteenth century but retains many Romanesque remains. In particular, this stalls the eighteenth century from the abbey Bellebranche classified as an historic monument, and a white marble font of Saint-Berthevin seventeenth. Walking through the village, be sure not to admire the castle of Linières listed historic monument. Built in the seventeenth century, it was bought in the mid 2010s in order to develop a theater and a dining room.
