Overlooking the Durance and hung on his rock, the old Embrun city owes its name to its position. The first inhabitants of the Celtic tribes call: Eburodunum (Ebr: water and Dun fortress hill).
Located in a geographic transition formed by the valley of the Durance one hand and his two highest slopes around 3000 m on the other hand, Embrun, 870 m, has a climate among the driest and sunniest of the Alps . This is why it is rightly nicknamed "Nice of the Alps" because of its temperate climate. Embrun is surrounded by mountains, unspoilt nature - the town is included in the peripheral zone of the Ecrins National Park - and winter sports resorts equipped (Les Orres, Vars-Risoul, Reallon Crévoux).
